Gaziantep

City in TürkiyeGaziantep lies inland in south-central Türkiye, not far north of the border with Syria and about 185 km east of Adana.

What it's known for

Gaziantep is the centre of pistachio growing and processing in Türkiye. In 2015 it became the first Turkish city named a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, and it is also a big producer of machine-made carpets.

Fun facts

  1. The city was long called Antep; in 1921 the Turkish parliament gave it the title Gazi to honour its resistance during the French siege of the city.
  2. The Zeugma Mosaic Museum holds about 1,700 square metres of mosaics from the ancient city of Zeugma, including the famous Gypsy Girl.
  3. In 2013 Gaziantep baklava became the first Turkish product to receive European protected status.

Finding it on the globe

From the northeast corner of the Mediterranean, go inland to the east until you are near the Syrian border. Gaziantep sits there, about 97 km north of Aleppo in Syria.
