Denizli

City in TürkiyeDenizli is an inland city in the Aegean Region of southwestern Türkiye, about 20 km south of the white terraces of Pamukkale.

What it's known for

Denizli has grown on textile production and exports. It is also the gateway for visitors to Pamukkale, whose name means 'cotton castle', and to the ancient city of Hierapolis, together a World Heritage Site since 1988.

Fun facts

  1. Deniz means 'sea' in Turkish, but there is no sea or lake near Denizli: the name probably grew out of an older name, Tonguzlu.
  2. The city's symbol is the Denizli rooster, a local breed whose cocks can crow for 20 to 25 seconds at a time.
  3. The ruins of the ancient city of Laodicea lie about 6 km north of Denizli.

Finding it on the globe

Draw a line from İzmir on the Aegean coast to Antalya on the Mediterranean coast. Denizli sits inland, close to the middle of that line.
