What it's known for

Antalya is called Türkiye's capital of tourism and is a key part of the Turkish Riviera, with long beaches such as Konyaaltı and Lara. Its old centre, Kaleiçi, has narrow cobbled streets lined with Ottoman-era houses.

Fun facts

  1. King Attalus II of Pergamon is seen as the founder of the city in about 150 BC, and it was named Attaleia in his honour.
  2. Hadrian's Gate was built by the Romans in honour of Emperor Hadrian, who visited the city in 130 AD.
  3. At the Lower Düden Waterfall, the Düden River drops 40 m into the Mediterranean Sea.

Finding it on the globe

Look for the large bay on the western half of Türkiye's Mediterranean coast. Antalya sits at the top of that bay, at the foot of the mountains.
