Eskişehir

City in TürkiyeEskişehir lies on the banks of the Porsuk River in northwestern Türkiye, inland at about 790 m above sea level, west of Ankara.

What it's known for

Eskişehir is known as a university town, with Anadolu University, Eskişehir Osmangazi University and Eskişehir Technical University. It is also an industrial city that makes railway locomotives, trucks and fighter aircraft engines, and it was the first stop of Türkiye's high-speed railway from Ankara.

Fun facts

  1. Eskişehir means 'Old City' in Turkish, and it grew up next to Dorylaeum, an ancient Phrygian city where the Crusaders won a battle in 1097.
  2. The city is famous for meerschaum, a stone carved into fine pipes, and it has a museum devoted to it.
  3. The old Odunpazarı district has Ottoman-era houses and the Odunpazarı Modern Museum, designed by the architect Kengo Kuma.
