Adana

City in TürkiyeAdana stands on the Seyhan River in the middle of the flat Çukurova plain in southern Türkiye, about 35 km inland from the northeastern shore of the Mediterranean.

What it's known for

The farmland of the plain made Adana a major centre of grain and cotton production in Ottoman times, and its cotton factories made it one of Türkiye's first industrialised cities.

Fun facts

  1. Taşköprü, a Roman stone bridge about 310 m long over the Seyhan, was probably built in the 2nd century AD and was still open to cars until 2007.
  2. The Adana kebab, hand-minced lamb on a wide iron skewer grilled over charcoal, is named after the city.
  3. A Greek and Roman legend says the city got its name from Adanus, a son of the god Uranus.

Finding it on the globe
