What it's known for

Nicknamed the Emerald City, Seattle is a major port and a gateway for trade with Asia and the Pacific. It was the main supply point for gold miners heading to Alaska and the Yukon after 1897. Amazon has its headquarters here, and the city is closely linked with grunge bands such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

  1. The city is named after Chief Seattle, a 19th-century leader of the Duwamish and Suquamish peoples.
  2. The Space Needle tower was built for the 1962 World's Fair, which was called the Century 21 Exposition.

Easy to mix up

Seattle is not the capital of Washington State: that is Olympia, about 80 km to the southwest. The state of Washington, in the far northwest, is also not Washington, D.C., the national capital on the east coast.
