What it's known for

Fun facts

  1. Settlers led by Brigham Young founded the city in 1847; it was called Great Salt Lake City until 1868, when 'Great' was dropped.
  2. The street grid starts from the southeast corner of Temple Square, and a common story says the streets are so wide because Brigham Young wanted a wagon pulled by oxen to be able to turn around.
  3. The Salt Lake Temple took 40 years to build: work started in 1853 and it was dedicated in 1893.
