What it's known for

Denver is the capital and most populous city of Colorado. It was founded in 1858 during a gold rush, where Cherry Creek meets the South Platte River, and grew into the main commercial and transport hub for a wide region of the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountain West.

Fun facts

  1. Its nickname is the 'Mile High City' because its official elevation is exactly one mile, or about 1,610 m, above sea level.
  2. William Larimer named the town Denver City to win favour with James W. Denver, the governor of Kansas Territory.
  3. The dome of the Colorado State Capitol is covered with real gold leaf, first added in 1908 in memory of the Colorado Gold Rush.
