Yerevan

Capital of ArmeniaYerevan lies along the Hrazdan River at the western edge of the Ararat Plain, rising from about 870 m to 1,390 m above sea level.

Why it's the capital

Yerevan grew from Erebuni, a fortress built in 782 BC on the orders of King Argishti I of Urartu, and over time the name changed from Erebuni to Yerevan. It has been the capital since 1918, the fourteenth capital in the history of Armenia.

Fun facts

  1. It is nicknamed "the Pink City" because many of its buildings are made of tuff, a volcanic stone that has a pink colour in this region.
  2. Mount Ararat, the main symbol of the city, can be seen from every part of Yerevan.
  3. The Matenadaran holds one of the largest collections of ancient books and manuscripts in the world.

Finding it on the globe

Yerevan is almost straight south of Tbilisi, in the western part of Armenia, close to the border with Türkiye.
