Muscat

Capital of OmanMuscat stretches along the Gulf of Oman in the northeast of Oman, with the Hajar Mountains behind it, not far from the Strait of Hormuz.

Why it's the capital

Muscat's port was already known in Roman times: the Greek geographer Ptolemy called it Cryptus Portus, the Hidden Port. In 1793 Oman's capital was moved here from Rustaq.

Fun facts

  1. The name Muscat is said to mean 'anchorage', the place where ships let fall the anchor.
  2. The Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts are the most notable buildings left by the Portuguese, who first sailed to Muscat in 1507 and surrendered it in 1650.
  3. Low, white buildings are a typical feature of the city's architecture.

Finding it on the globe

Follow Oman's coast south-east from the Strait of Hormuz towards the eastern tip of Arabia. Muscat is on that coast, facing the Gulf of Oman, before you reach the tip.
