Kuwait City

Capital of KuwaitKuwait City lies on the south shore of Kuwait Bay, an inlet of the Persian Gulf, in the heart of the country.

Why it's the capital

In the early 1700s it was a small fishing village. The Bani Utbah settled here, and in 1752 they chose Sabah I bin Jaber as their ruler. The town became the centre of the state that grew around it.

Fun facts

  1. The name Kuwait comes from an Arabic word for a small fortress built near water.
  2. The Kuwait Towers opened in 1979 and store water, and the upper sphere of the tallest tower turns a full circle every 30 minutes.
  3. Kuwait was once the centre of boat building in the Persian Gulf, and its ships carried goods to India, East Africa and the Red Sea.
