Thimphu

Capital of BhutanThimphu lies in the western central part of Bhutan, in the valley of the Wang Chuu river, at about 2,250 to 2,650 m above sea level.

Why it's the capital

In 1952 the decision was made to move the capital from the ancient capital of Punakha to Thimphu, and in 1961 Thimphu officially became the capital. Before 1960 it was only a group of hamlets scattered across the valley.
