Seville

City in SpainSeville, the capital of Andalusia, lies on the lower Guadalquivir River in south-western Spain, about 80 km upriver from the Atlantic Ocean.

What it's known for

Seville was the only port given the royal monopoly for trade with Spain's lands in the Americas. Its cathedral, the Alcázar palace and the Archive of the Indies together form a World Heritage Site, and the city is also known for flamenco, Holy Week and its April Fair.

  1. Seville Cathedral is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, and its bell tower, the Giralda, was first built as a minaret for the city's Great Mosque.
  2. The cathedral is one of two places that claim to hold the remains of Christopher Columbus.
  3. The Romans called the city Hispalis, a name that became Išbīliya in Arabic.
