Naples

City in ItalyMount Vesuvius rises about 9 km east of Naples, which lies on the Gulf of Naples on the west coast of southern Italy. The city is the capital of the Campania region.

What it's known for

Naples is famous for its food, above all pizza, and the art of the Neapolitan pizza maker is on UNESCO's list of intangible heritage. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Naples and then of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, and its historic centre became a World Heritage Site in 1995.

  1. Greek settlers named the city Neápolis, meaning 'new city', when they refounded it in the 6th century BC.
  2. The University of Naples Federico II, founded in 1224, is regarded as the oldest state-funded secular university in the world.
  3. In AD 79 nearby Vesuvius erupted and destroyed the Roman towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Go down Italy's west coast from Rome to the big bay with a volcano beside it: Naples is on the northern side of that bay, south-east of Rome.
