Liverpool

City in United KingdomOn the eastern side of the Mersey Estuary in north-west England, Liverpool sits close to where the river meets the Irish Sea.

What it's known for

King John founded the borough of Liverpool in 1207, and it grew into a major port on the Mersey. It is the city of the Beatles and of the football clubs Liverpool and Everton, and it was a European Capital of Culture in 2008.

Fun facts

  1. The name comes from Old English words meaning a pool or creek of thick, muddy water.
  2. The first commercial wet dock was built in Liverpool in 1715.
  3. Two copper Liver Birds, each about 5.5 m tall, stand on the towers of the Royal Liver Building, whose clock faces are bigger than those of Big Ben in London.

Finding it on the globe

Look at England's west coast, facing Ireland, and find the wide mouth of the River Mersey: Liverpool is on its eastern shore, where the estuary opens to the Irish Sea.

Easy to mix up

Liverpool and Manchester are only about 56 km apart. Liverpool is the one on the coast at the mouth of the Mersey; Manchester is inland to the north-east.
