Sucre

Why it's the capital

After Bolivia won independence, the city was proclaimed the provisional capital in July 1826. In 1839 a law made it the capital of Bolivia and renamed it in honour of the revolutionary leader Antonio José de Sucre.

Fun facts

  1. Before it took its present name, the city was known as Charcas, La Plata and Chuquisaca.
  2. It is nicknamed La Ciudad Blanca, the White City, because many of its colonial houses and buildings are painted white.
  3. On 25 May 1809, the ringing of the bell of the Basilica of San Francisco started Bolivia's independence movement.

Look in the south-central part of Bolivia, in the Andean valleys southeast of La Paz.

Easy to mix up

Many players tap La Paz, which became the seat of government in the late 1800s after Potosí's silver industry declined. Under the constitution, Sucre is still the capital and the home of the Supreme Court.
