St. George's

Capital of GrenadaSt. George's curves around a horseshoe-shaped harbour at the southwest end of Grenada and is surrounded by the hillside of an old volcano crater.

Why it's the capital

The French founded the town in 1650 and called it Saint Louis, later Port Louis. When Britain took over Grenada under the Treaty of Paris in 1763, it was renamed Saint George's Town, and it later also served as the capital of the British Windward Islands.

Fun facts

  1. Fort George was built by the French in 1705, and many of its buildings are now used by the police.
  2. Fort Frederick, begun by the French in 1779, was built with its cannons pointing inland toward the hills instead of out to sea.
  3. On 1 November 1775 the town was hit by a fire that became known as the great fire of St George's.

Finding it on the globe

Grenada is the southernmost of the Windward Islands, about 160 km north of Trinidad. St. George's is at the southwest end of the island.
