Pristina

Capital of KosovoPristina lies on a plain near the Gollak Hills, in the east-central part of Kosovo.

Why it's the capital

In 1948 Pristina was chosen as the capital of the province of Kosovo within Yugoslavia. Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008; many but not all countries recognise it, and Pristina has remained its capital.

Fun facts

  1. The Newborn monument, the word NEWBORN in giant letters, was unveiled on 17 February 2008, the day Kosovo declared independence, and it is repainted with new designs.
  2. The National Library of Kosovo has 99 domes of different sizes and is covered in a metal net.
  3. The ruins of Ulpiana, an important Roman city, lie about 12 km southeast of Pristina.

Finding it on the globe

Kosovo is a small landlocked country between Serbia, Montenegro, Albania and North Macedonia. Pristina is a short way north of Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia.
