Prague

Capital of CzechiaPrague lies on the Vltava River in Bohemia, the historical land that forms the western part of Czechia.

Why it's the capital

Prague was the capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia and the home of several Holy Roman Emperors. After the First World War it was chosen as the capital of Czechoslovakia, and in 1993, when Czechoslovakia split, it became the capital of Czechia.

Fun facts

  1. The Prague astronomical clock was first installed in 1410, making it the third-oldest astronomical clock in the world and the oldest one still working.
  2. Prague is nicknamed the 'City of a Hundred Spires'.
  3. Emperor Charles IV founded Charles University here, the oldest university in Central Europe.

Finding it on the globe

Czechia is landlocked between Germany, Poland, Slovakia and Austria. Prague is in its western half, roughly halfway along a line from Berlin to Vienna.
