Dodoma

Capital of TanzaniaFar from the Indian Ocean coast, Dodoma lies in the centre of Tanzania, about 1,120 m above sea level, in a semi-arid region.

Why it's the capital

In 1974, after a nationwide referendum, the government decided to move the capital from Dar es Salaam to a more central place. Dodoma has been the official capital since 1996, and the president's office and the ministries finished moving to the city's Mtumba area in 2019.

Fun facts

  1. The name Dodoma means 'it has sunk' in Gogo, the language of one of the area's local peoples.
  2. The modern town was founded in 1907 by German colonists while they were building Tanzania's central railway line.
  3. Tanzanian wine is produced in the area around Dodoma.

Ignore the coast and aim for the middle of Tanzania. Dodoma lies about 450 km west of Dar es Salaam, far inland.

Easy to mix up

Many players tap Dar es Salaam, the big port on the coast. It was the capital before the move and remains Tanzania's commercial and maritime capital.
