Ciudad de la Paz

Capital of Equatorial GuineaCiudad de la Paz is a planned city in the tropical rainforest near the centre of Río Muni, the mainland part of Equatorial Guinea. It stands far inland, about 450 m above sea level, in a region with Cameroon to the north and Gabon to the east and south.

Why it's the capital

In 2011 the government announced plans for a new capital on the mainland. The site was chosen for its easy access, milder climate and inland position, after a 2004 coup attempt raised fears about access to the capital by sea. Government offices began moving there in 2017, and a presidential decree of 2 January 2026 made it the capital.

Fun facts

  1. Until 2017 the city was called Oyala. Its new name, Ciudad de la Paz, is Spanish for 'City of Peace'.
  2. A golf course, a university, a luxury hotel and a six-lane highway were finished here in 2013, four years before the government started to move in.
  3. The city gets its electricity from the Djibloho Dam on the Wele River, a 120-megawatt hydroelectric plant that opened in October 2012.

Finding it on the globe

Find the mainland part of Equatorial Guinea, just south of Cameroon. From Bata on the coast, go east about two-thirds of the way to Mongomo on the Gabon border: Ciudad de la Paz is there, in the forest.

Easy to mix up

Many players tap Malabo, on Bioko island in the Gulf of Guinea, which was Equatorial Guinea's capital until the 2026 decree. The new capital is on the mainland, south-east of Bioko.
