Toronto

What it's known for

Toronto is the capital of the province of Ontario and Canada's largest financial centre, home to the Toronto Stock Exchange. It is also a major centre for music, theatre, film and television production.

  1. The name probably comes from the Mohawk word 'tkaronto', meaning 'where there are trees standing in the water'.
  2. Until 1834 the town was called York; that year it became a city and was renamed Toronto.
  3. The CN Tower, 553.3 m tall, was the world's tallest free-standing structure from 1975 until 2007.
