Cape Town

City in South AfricaCape Town lies near the south-western tip of Africa, on the shore of Table Bay at the northern end of the Cape Peninsula. Flat-topped Table Mountain rises above the city centre.

What it's known for

Cape Town is South Africa's oldest city, nicknamed the 'Mother City', and the capital of the Western Cape. It grew from a way-station that Jan van Riebeeck set up in 1652 for Dutch East India Company ships travelling to the Dutch East Indies.

Fun facts

  1. Table Mountain is the only land feature that has given its name to a constellation: Mensa, which means 'the table'.
  2. When a south-easterly wind pushes moist air up Table Mountain, a thin layer of cloud forms over the top that locals call the 'tablecloth'.
  3. Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison on Robben Island in Table Bay, and after his release in 1990 he gave his first public speech from the balcony of Cape Town City Hall.
